Please avoid any sun exposure, including tanning beds and tanning lotions prior to your appointment for at least 3-4 weeks. Scar camouflage may not be performed on tanned skin, but should be done on your most natural skin color for color-matching purposes. You must also avoid excessive sun exposure 30 days post procedure as well. THIS IS CRUCIAL FOR SKIN THAT TENDS TO HYPER-PIGMENT! The more melanin rich your skin is, the more careful you must be to abiding by this rule.

If you have undergone laser treatments or other skin resurfacing treatments, it is important to wait a minimum of 4-12 weeks (depending on laser procedure) prior to your tattoo appointment. You must also avoid steroids, antibiotics and anything that causes photosensitivity.

It is also crucial to avoid waxing and shaving 3 weeks before and a minimum of 4 weeks after.

If you are being treated with Accutane, you must wait a minimum of 6 months after you’re done with your medication before you get your paramedical tattoo. Also if you are taking any medications such as anti-biotics, steriods or anything that may increase your skin's photosensitivity you must wait 3 weeks to receive a tattoo after your last dose. You may also want to consult your physician prior if there are certain medications you take daily that you may need to be advised on prior to electing to getting a tattoo, chemical peel, or any microneedling service.

One week prior to your paramedical tattoo appointment, products that increase bleeding/thinning of the blood should be avoided with the approval of your doctor. The following medications increase likelihood of bleeding, leading to improper absorption of pigment:

 

  • Anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen),

  • Blood-thinners, or any medication containing ibuprofen or aspirin. 

  • Vitamin E 

  • Fish oil (omegas) 

  • Nicotine
